August 2005

We began August as we had ended July by "creaming" the Oil Seed Rape honey - gently warming the tub and stirring the honey until it was softened before bottling it quickly into jars. We hope people like our early attempts at creamed honey and will buy it.
On 5th August Paul went back to Flaxton to strim the area around the bracken and weeds around the hives. Bracken clearing Before: All covered in long Bracken

Bracken clearingPaul attacks with a Sickle

Bracken clearing After: The finished area after a the petrol strimmer had cleaned things up

All the bee colonies there are now very wild and vicious - they even tried to sting the petrol grass strimmer! We shall really have to keep an eye on these bees!

The spark plug on the strimmer was covered in stings!

The rest of August was mainly taken up with regular hive inspections and preparing to remove the heavy, full supers of honey in September.
