MAY 2002
The first routine inspection of the hives was made by Dad, John and
Paul on Saturday, 4th May.
Hive 1 - OK, quite powerful with alot of bees but no new brood.
Hive 2 - Not very good, Very few bees. no brood. We must do something
about this colony soon.
Hive 3 - Very strong. They are now 2 1/2 boxes and one Super.
Hive 4 - Very strong, but aggressive colony of actiwe bees.
Hive 5 - OK, One super added to this colony.
Hive 6 - OK. Now 2 brood boxes on this hive.
But what shall we do about the failing Hive 2 colony. Drastic action must
be taken to save it!
A full frame of fresh, young brood and eggs was transferred from hive
3 to hive 2 and the old failing queen was found and removed from the hive.
Hopefully, the bees will produce a new queen from these eggs.
On Friday, 7th May Paul accidentally knocked Hive 4. The angry, disturbed
bees poured out and stung him several times on the legs.
Ouch!
Something must be done with these aggressive bees before someone else
is stung. Dad talked to our next door neighbour who told him he had also
been stung.
These aggressive hives of bees must go!
Lynn has some friends who own a small wood in the village of Flaxton near
York. They were happy to take on these angry bees. Paul made a metal frame
from an old hospital trolley to support and transport the two hives. So,
on Wednesday 12th May Dad and Paul moved the 2 hives (4 and ?) after dark
to a new site at Flaxton. (It has to be at dawn or dusk when all the bees
are still in the hive).
Hopefully, peace will now be restored again to our garden!
